Ships overview to America

Between 1840 and 1920 about 12,000 persons emigrated from West Zeeuwsvlaanderen to North America to improve their living standard. The trip was undertaken by boat from mainly three harbors: Antwerp, Rotterdam or Amsterdam. Most shipping was direct to the US, some through Great Britain, mainly Liverpool.

Bram Vergouwe was a very enthousiastic genealogist who volunteered to put the immigrant data into a database. It was his database that I used to further research this group and if possible to add the name of the ship they travelled on, their final destination in North America and some descendants. For this research I made use of other sites like: www.ellisislandrecords.org, Ancestry en www.jewishgen.org.

As always I will appreciate your comments, additions and corrections. To find the name of a ship just select the first letter of its name and then select the ship in the timeframe it was supposed to have sailed. It wil show you the manifest with the (Dutch only) immigrants. You can select the person from this list and view his/her family situation. Enjoy!
